SELECTING ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS: A BEGINNERS GUIDE
22 October 2003, London
The people responsible for the selection, purchase, customisation and exploitation of electronic information resources need to develop new skill sets, which will consist of decision-making, analysing, influencing and negotiating plus business understanding. The selection of electronic information products is a complex process. It is essential to understand, why the information is needed and to have awareness of the full range of information resources available. It is equally important to be able to keep within restricted budgets and be confident enough to decide between similar resources.
BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING
This course/workshop is designed to assist participants to develop the skills and confidence needed to select and exploit electronic information products. The course will include some practical exercises.
By the end of the event participants will have:
· Demonstrate the importance of organisational information needs in choosing information resources
· Utilise their organisation's selection policy for information resources
· Find out about information products and vendors
· Use selection and evaluation criteria
· Choose information products appropriate to organisational information needs and infrastructure
· Set up records and procedures
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This course is aimed at people, who are about to or have recently started a role involved with the selection and purchase of electronic information resources for use in an information centre or for desktop access.
It is aimed at people working for special or workplace information centres and libraries and is not suitable for the public and academic sector for which specialised purchasing consortia exist. An advanced course for people with more experience in the role will be run in early 2004.
