I would like to thank Val and Sally for their comments re LKDN and
contribute to this discussion wearing my LKDN Chair hat.
I agree with all Val and Sally say - and would re-inforce the fact that
LKDN is a very new body which will have a very new feel.
There are over 30 members of LKDN, one for each WDC area (not always a
"WDC" librarian), one each for Wales, Scotland and Ireland plus invitees
such as Veronica Fraser, NHS Library Adviser and Ailson Turner from NeLH.
In addition to the main membership group, it is the policy of the new body
to co-opt librarians from "the coal face" onto its working groups for just
the purpose you indicate. There will also be "task and finish groups" set
up from time to time to address issues as they arise.
The existing working groups include:
The Workforce Development Group (issues covered include Agenda for Change
and several other current initiatives related to changing competencies and
qualifications frameworks)
The Informatics Group (works with NeLH, NHSIA etc on wide range of
electronic resource/technical issues)
The Purchasing Group ( works with PASA and NCCG to achieve cost effective
purchasing across the country)
The Quality and Statistics Group (work includes initiating and supporting
quality and benchmarking tools)
Membership of the groups is still under development but I believe most of
them include representation form "those actually providing the services".
In Kent, Surrey and Sussex area there are already three librarians
involved with LKDN activities.
As well as co-opting people with appropriate skills and experience onto
the working groups, the LKDN Website, which is under development, will
include papers, minutes etc so that everyone can keep up to date with LKDN
activities and respond via their LKDN representative or working group
membership should they wish. When ready the LKDN strategy and workplan
will also be put onto the site.
Incidentally, I think it is a little misleading to say that "LKDN
represents regional and WDC-level interests, not those actually providing
the services" as though WDC librarians had nothing to do with supporting
the development of local library and knowledge services. The development
of local services is at the heart of LKDN's work and one of the major ways
in which we support this is by working together at national level to
influence policy makers. The RLG made a major contribution to NHS library
services - I hope LKDN will be able to do at least as well
