Apologies for crossposting
Message on behalf of HLG Committee
(apologies to others, tho the general issue of codes of ethics may be an issue you want to comment on too?)
This was discussed in some detail at the HLG committee meeting last month. We decided that this was an individual professional issue, rather than one that HLG should or could respond to on behalf of its members. Several committee members will certainly be responding on a personal basis, and we hope that other health librarians will also be doing so.
The draft code, background information and a feedback form are available at http://www.cilip.org.uk/about/code.html
*Deadline is end of July*
Thank you.

Personal comments from me:
1. I will be happy to post my own personal comments separately once I have had the chance to read it. I do appreciate how difficult it is to fit in something like this, but hope others will also find time to check it out and give CILIP feedback.
2. It would be interesting to hear views on this list from non-CILIP members who have experience of other codes of ethics (and their practical use,too)?
3. Other codes
EAHIL has a code of ethics- see http://www.eahil.org/code_ethics.htm
One of our members compared the CILIP ones to the rather more concise GMC ones:
'The general professional standards which apply to all doctors are those which we publish and the standards set for each specialty by the medical Royal Colleges, by the specialist societies and associations, and, in future, by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. . The basis of professional practice is set out in our booklet Good Medical Practice which we give to all registered doctors.
Good Medical Practice explains, for example, that every doctor must:
be professionally competent;
perform consistently well;
practise ethically;
do patients no harm;
be an effective team player; and
take action if poor practice places patients at unnecessary risk. '
(from http://www.gmc-uk.org/standards/default.htm)
The NHSIA is also developing 'Principles of good practice for health informatics professionals'- I will be happy to forward details, but I know not to add attachments to list emails! They are also short and concise, and have been sent to CIIP.
