SELLING THE BENEFITS OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES IN A COST-CONSCIOUS WORLD
CILIP workshop, 4th March 2003, London
In a cost-conscious world, where library and information services need to compete with other support services for resource allocation, senior managers must be able to market library and information services both to other senior managers within their own organization, and to existing and potential customers.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This new workshop is designed to introduce participants from academic and workplace libraries to techniques that will help with planning and executing marketing, and make them aware of the of possible pitfalls.
Participants will be encouraged to consider how they can convey the benefits of library and information services to different target audiences, and explore some of the fundamental issues underpinning marketing strategies for library and information services, such as:
* In what ways do customers differ now than they did five years ago?
* What will our customers want in five years' time?
* What changes do we need to make to our customer interface to ensure we respond to customers' desires?
* How can we implement these changes in our library and information units and across the whole sector?
* What can we offer that IT professionals can't?
* How can we compete with the internet?
* What additional skills do we need to develop to make the customer aware of our distinctly valuable skills?
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is for senior managers from academic and workplace libraries who have responsibility for marketing library and information services.
