--

The Post
--------

This new post is based in the Subject Librarians Team in the J.B.
Morrell Library at the University of York, but will work closely with
colleagues in the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull and
the HYMS Medical Education Unit. Regular travel between the two campuses
will be necessary and the post holder will be required to work at either
campus as required.

The post will deliver information services to HYMS staff and students
and information skills training to students in HYMS. In addition, it
will form the vital link between the two University Libraries and the
HYMS Medical Education Unit (MEU). Although administratively based in
the University of York Library, the post holder will be an integral
member of the HYMS team and a member of the MEU. As such, regular
day-to-day contact with colleagues in the HYMS MEU and with the HYMS
teaching staff are an essential part of the post.

The post holder is responsible for being the main intermediary between
the Libraries and academic staff, researchers and students in HYMS. The
post holder will be required to have an understanding of the services
required on each campus and the ability to liaise effectively with other
library and information services staff in both libraries. As HYMS
students will be on placement in NHS sites from the outset, it will be
especially important for the post holder to establish and maintain links
with the NHS libraries across the HYMS region and the Knowledge Service
Manager in the Workforce Development Confederation.

formal and informal channels; with other library staff in both
University Libraries, especially those involved in service delivery to
Health Sciences; participation in interdisciplinary Library groups and
project teams; with other University departments and centres; with
external organisations (such as local NHS libraries);

Provision of subject support to HYMS: working closely with HYMS to
facilitate their effective use of information resources for research,
teaching and learning; informing HYMS of the developing options for the
provision of library and information resources; providing specialist
subject information support, including knowledge of collections in the
two University Libraries and other libraries, electronic material,
databases and Internet resources; drawing up, agreeing, monitoring and
updating an Information Resources and Access Policy (IRAP) for HYMS;

Enquiry services: answering subject-related enquiries; participation in
central enquiry desk and telephone services as appropriate;

Collection development: developing and managing the HYMS collection
development and management policies within the IRAP; selection of
information resources (e.g. books, journals, electronic); advice on
classification of new materials; decisions on acceptance of gifts and
donations; advice on relegation of materials; maintenance and
development of subject web pages and other related Internet information;

Resource management: managing the spending of funds for books, journals
and other information resources in partnership with HYMS; advising the
University Librarians and the HYMS Director of Medical Education on
resource implications for new and changing courses and research
activities;

Publications and publicity: promotion of printed and electronic
resources; promotion of resources and access arrangements available
outside the Universities; production of electronic and printed guides to
subject resources;

Evaluation and audit: monitoring of the SLA between the University
Libraries and HYMS; using the results of surveys and liaison information
to ensure services match user needs; keeping up to date with the
teaching/learning requirements and providing information for QAA and GMC
audits and reviews; keeping aware of HYMS research interests as well as
trends in the wider national community; evaluating training sessions
using student and staff feedback.

Personal qualities
------------------

We are seeking an enthusiastic, resourceful and self-motivated graduate,
with a library qualification or equivalent experience, who has:

- excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the
ability to work effectively with academic, administrative and library
staff at all levels;

- the initiative to develop new approaches to supporting high quality
teaching and research and to identify problem areas and propose
solutions;

- excellent organisational skills and the capacity to work independently
when necessary;

- a flexible approach and the ability to respond positively to a
changing environment.

Knowledge of the information requirements of medical and/or health staff
and students or experience in delivering information services in the
medical or health environment will be an advantage, as will an
appreciation of the issues surrounding provision of information
resources in higher education and the NHS.

Background information
----------------------

The Hull York Medical School
----------------------------

The Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is an equal partnership between the
University of Hull and the University of York. It will have an annual
intake of 130 undergraduate medical students starting in September 2003.
Graduates will be awarded a joint degree of the two Universities.

HYMS is being developed by staff from both universities and colleagues
from the North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire Strategic
Health Authority. It reflects fully the need for improvements in health
care in this large area and will help to address the problems of poor
health status associated with urban and rural deprivation in an area not
previously served by an undergraduate medical school.

The shared vision is that HYMS will take a distinctive and innovative
approach to training doctors for the health services of the 21st
century. There will be a strong focus on learning in community settings,
including primary care, and on working collaboratively with other health
professionals. The curriculum will use a wide range of contemporary
learning and assessment methods and strategies.

The development of HYMS will build on existing experience of working in
partnership with the NHS in the delivery of education for health and
social care professionals in university and clinical settings.

Students will be based primarily at either Hull or York (65 at each) for
the first two years. At the end of year two, students will form a single
cohort for allocation to clinical placements across the Strategic Health
Authority.

The Medical Education Unit
--------------------------

The Medical Education Unit will develop and implement the curriculum and
prepare the large body of clinical and non-clinical teachers in time for
the arrival of HYMS' first students in September 2003. The curriculum is
innovative and distinctive involving a high proportion of clinical
contact, particularly in community and primary healthcare settings. It
will use a variety of modern teaching approaches and technologies.

The Medical Education Unit will include staff both at the University of
Hull and the University of York, some of whom will travel regularly
between the two sites.

The University of York
----------------------

The University of York was founded in 1963 with 200 students. It has now
expanded to nearly 10,000 students and has over 30 academic departments
and research centres.

>From its inception, the University has concentrated on strong viable
departments and teaching and research of the highest quality. York and
Cambridge top the teaching league with the highest scores in official
teaching assessments. York is also rated 6th out of 172 Higher Education
institutions for research, with 18 of its 23 departments rated 5 or 5*.

The University of York Library
------------------------------

The J.B. Morrell Library is the main library of the University of York,
and its aim is to support the learning, teaching and research that take
place within the University. It has over eighty members of staff and a
stock of over 800,000 items with subscriptions to over 3,000 printed
journals and a similar number of electronic journals. The Raymond Burton
Library for Humanities Research has just been completed and building
work is about to start on the new Borthwick Institute. The combined
Library and archive collections will form a major resource for research
into the humanities.

There are two branch libraries at the King’s Manor in the centre of York
and at Harrogate District Hospital and a close association with York
Minster Library and the National Railway Museum Library. As part of the
support provided for students in the Department of Health Sciences there
are also agreements with the hospital libraries at York, Northallerton
and Scarborough.

The University of York Library has three operational divisions: User
Services is responsible for the lending of books and other materials,
inter-library lending and document supply, shelving, photocopying and
the photographic department; Collection Management is responsible for
ordering, receiving and cataloguing new materials, and for providing
direct support for the academic work of the Subject Librarians; Subject
Services and Information Systems consists of the Subject Librarians and
the Systems Team which manages the Library’s computer systems.

The Subject Librarians Team consists of the Head of Subject Services and
seven Subject Librarians, supplemented by three staff in other sections
of the Library, each with responsibility for one department, and the
Library Manager at Harrogate District Hospital. The University does not
have Faculties or Schools so each full time Subject Librarian is
normally responsible for a number of individual departments.

Subject Librarians are responsible for being the main intermediary
between the Library and academic staff, researchers and students in
their departments. They work closely with Departmental Library
Representatives to ensure that the services and collections provided by
the Library are appropriate to the needs of the Department’s teaching
and research activities. Many departments also have departmental library
committees where issues can be discussed with academic staff and
students.

Subject Librarians are supported by the Subject Support Team of library
assistants who are based in Collection Management and who carry out a
variety of tasks for Subject Librarians including: checking suggestions
for purchase and reading lists against the catalogue, finding
bibliographic information for orders, checking lists of secondhand
books, gifts and missing items, cataloguing and classification, enquiry
duties and assisting with library tours and information skills
workshops.

The University of Hull
----------------------

Since its foundation in 1927, the University of Hull has enjoyed a
distinguished history of providing outstanding education as well as a
rich life experience for students. Based in the leafy suburbs of a
historic, yet forward-looking City, it is a cosmopolitan university with
a well-deserved reputation for friendliness and success.

The University of Hull plays a critical role in both the local community
and the City of Hull, making a major contribution to both the economic
and cultural life of the community. We are involved in projects helping
local people, schools, business and community groups via our academic
departments as well as voluntary organisations from within the
university.

University of Hull Academic Services Libraries
----------------------------------------------

Academic Services Libraries is committed to the provision of a first
class service to all students and staff - facilitating access to
traditional and digital resources for learning, teaching and research.
Academic Services Libraries comprises the Brynmor Jones Library and the
Map Room on the Hull campus and the Keith Donaldson Library on the
Scarborough campus. The Brynmor Jones Library is the largest of the
libraries, with eight public floors, over 2000 workplaces and more than
70 networked computers. The Brynmor Jones Library holds close to a
million items, added to which we have digital collections that include
more than 50 indexing, abstracting and full text databases and over
5,000 electronic journals.

Academic Services Libraries was awarded the Charter Mark in 1998 and
2001. Academic Services as a whole is an Investor in People.
