Outsourcing Library and Information Services: Threat or Opportunity?
Over the last year many large organisations driven by an insatiable desire to "squeeze" their assets have put their library & information & research functions under the microscope. Concurrent with this interest has been a growth in the number of vendors offering a suite of outsourced information and research products. This important event to be held on Thursday June 12th 2003 between 09.00 and 17.30 at 7, Ridgmount Street, London WC1E 7AE will seek to address this fundamental question:
"Should subcontracted / outsourced information and research become an integral part of the organisation's operations in 2003?"
Setting the Scene
* Chair: Paul J Corney: Conference objectives / personal reflections from a research assignment which assessed the European demand for subcontracted information and research.
* Napp Pharmaceuticals: Roger James, CIO: "A view from the executive floor": a provocative session on the efficacy or otherwise of outsourcing.
Establishing the parameters: feedback from recent research
* TFPL / Business 360 - TFPL is working with Business360 to gain a better understanding of a much talked about but little measured trend - the outsourcing of business research and information services. The presentation will draw on the results of this work.
* David Ball, Associate Head of Academic Services, Bournemouth University. He chairs Procurement for Libraries and the Libraries Group of the Southern Universities Purchasing Consortium, and has negotiated ground-breaking agreements with suppliers for services and materials.
Panel Session: What the vendors say
A series of case studies (not sales presentations) from two of the leading exponents in the subcontracting market place that identify what processes were subcontracted and why, what the economics were and how it has enhanced the workings of the client.
* Fresh Minds: Charlie Osmond, Founder. Award winning organisation providing firms with access to some of Europe's top young minds for bespoke research projects and permanent recruitment.
* Instant Library: Diana Edmonds, Managing Director. As part of Diana's role with Instant Library, she is currently acting as the Interim Manager of Haringey Libraries, Archives and Museum Service, a Public/Private Partnership programme which has recently received "highly commended" in the Local Government Chronicle awards programme.
Panel Session: The changing role of the information professional / new organisational structures
Three case studies that will look at how a number of senior information and research professionals have developed additional skill sets and transitioned to new roles to meet the challenges presented by the increasing demand for more efficient information and research functions.
* Aon Ltd: Jonathan Gordon-Till, Information Manager (Research). One of the pre-eminent global institutions focusing on insurance and risk management, human capital consulting, and insurance underwriting
