The University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM is delighted to announce a new website devoted to the life and achievements of the British epidemiologist Archibald Leman Cochrane (1909-1988). Archie Cochrane, who worked in south Wales from the 1948 until his semi-retirement in 1974. Is recognised as a seminal influence in the evidence-based medicine movement devoted to ensuring that patients are treated according to the best and most reliable evidence.
Some years ago Archie Cochrane's personal and professional papers, photographs and other memorabilia were deposited at the UWCM Library in Llandough Hospital, Nr Cardiff where he carried out much of his work. The catalogue has now been mounted onto the Archive Cochrane website - together with: biographical material; details of his publications; photographs; extracts from his professional papers, his poetry and his autobiography; video clips of his pioneering population based surveys in the mining valleys of south Wales.
The web pages recording his professional and personal life provide a rich resource for researchers, scholars and others interested in the history of medicine and particularly the development of the concepts underpinning evidence-based care.
Launched in December 2002, the website marks the first stage of UWCM's plans to establish a Centre for the History of Evaluation in Healthcare.
The website can be accessed via the University of Wales College of Medicine's home page using the search facility. www.uwcm.ac.uk
