NeLH Business Case Approval
The Full Business Case for the NeLH service for the next 3 years has
passed three crucial milestones.
It has been approved by the Programme Board, by the NHS IA Board and the
project has passed OGC Gateway 3 (investment decision) with a green light.
The remaining stage for the business case is approval by the Department of
Health as soon as possible.

Existing Featured Content
New Version of Clinical Evidence available. January 2003 edition includes
new topics such as Insomnia and Pancreatic cancer, and updated topics,
such as acute myocardial infarction and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
There is also a new drug nomenclature and brand names table. It includes
all drugs mentioned in Clinical Evidence: their international name, UK
name, USA name, and both US and UK brand names.

50 000 paper copies of Concise Clinical Evidence are being distributed to
NHS Staff including General Practitioners by post and for collection at
post-graduate education centres for all other staff. FAQs at

Diabetes NSF. The NSF Zone www.nelh.nhs.uk/nsf/diabetes contains links to
related Diabetes resources in NHS Direct Online, NeLH and elsewhere, and
will continue to develop as a growing resource supporting consultation,
feedback and planning over the coming period leading up to the full
publication and implementation of the Diabetes NSF.
New version of The Cochrane Library available. www.nelh.nhs.uk/cochrane
Version 1, 2003 includes 77 new reviews, such as day hospital versus
admission policy for people with acute psychiatric disorders, whether pre-
term infants do better if nursed in cots or incubators, and whether a
placebo is different to nothing in drug trials.

New Features of NeLH
Completed
Health Informatics launches Events News feed. The Health informatics
Specialist Library automatically polls the events pages of collaborating
websites, which are collated to produce a combined listing which can then
be reproduced within other websites.
Health Informatics organisations can now use this free service by
following the instructions provided on the news-feed website

The latest NICE Schizophrenia Guideline has been added to the NeLH Full-
text Collection: see: www.nelh.nhs.uk/guidelinefinder/
150 new Guidelines have been added to the Guideline Finder database –
following a survey of Specialist Library requirements. Non-UK guidelines
will now be added and look out for future changes in news features for
guidelines.
Service Re-design toolkits (1) from the Modernisation Agency’s Coronary
Heart Disease Services Collaborative have also been added to the CHD NSF

Service Re-design toolkits (2) from the Modernisation Agency’s Cancer
Services Collaborative will be added to the Cancer NSF

Planned
Development of the new RMS system for NeLH continues. Child Health,
Coronary Heart Disease, Musculo-skeletal Diseases and Communicable
Diseases will trial the system during Feb/March together with the
Guidelines Finder and NSF Zones. The URL for the prototype system will be
shared with other Specialist Libraries and evaluation will lead to a full
working version for April/May this year. Specialist Library content will
migrate to the new system over the coming year and there will further
development of enhanced functionality during this time.
NeLH Emergency Care is about to launch an emergency care leads toolkit.
This resource has links to all sorts of documents and evidence around
emergency healthcare modernisation. It will be going live during

Communications
Activity and Feedback
NeLH Usage Rises Again. NeLH recorded 3.8 million hits in January,
equalling its previous record month of November 2002. NeLH now has 54,000
users a month, which has doubled over the last 12 months. Additionally,
NeLH dealt with 141 feedback requests in January 2003.
Popular NeLH Resources. NeLH’s search engine, Anatomy.TV, Cochrane
Library, Clinical Evidence and NeLH Guidelines Finder continue to be the
most used resources on the site.
NeLH will be using “Web Trends live” for reporting statistics and will in
future be reporting page impressions as an indictor of use along with
unique hosts.
Promotional & Training Activities

The NeLH Communication Plan for 2003/6 has been completed. Key elements
are to have 200,000 unique hosts accessing the library per month by 2006
together with 300 strong network of facilitators working with clinicians
to firstly raise awareness of the library then raise standards of
searching and finally help users integrate know how and knowledge with
practise

Review of Training & Promotional materials. All NeLH items are being
reviewed and updated in the next two months in collaboration with
stakeholders. There are still promotional items at

for new materials are being taken on 08453 660066.
A series of events are being arranged for trainers and librarians in a
master class format. At these events delegates will be able to access
detailed training of the major resources and have an opportunity to join
the NeLH network. Details will be released in March on

Representatives of BMJ Publishing Group will promote NeLH at the RCN
Education Show education together with RCN Independent Nurses event and
Community Pharmacists between February and April
F.O.L.I.O Around 200 health librarians across the UK are just about to
finish their first three-week online course on project management. The
course (the first of three run by Andrew Booth of ScHARR) has been run as
pilot as part of the NeLH Librarian Development programme was free to NHS
Librarians (including academic and charities). The next course is
entitled "Evaluating Your Service" To register send an email by 5pm
