Dear Colleagues,
Many thanks to all those that responded to my request for feedback on
effective methods of promoting a library and its services. I have been
asked if I would be prepared to share the feedback with the list, a summary
of replies is below.
The feedback that I received indicated that libraries are adopting a variety
of different promotional methods, one library has even introduced a free
drinks machine and television during major sporting events as a way of
attracting readers and raising the profile of the service!
All those that responded were using some of the traditional promotional
methods that you would expect, this included newsletters, mail outs,
Intranet/Internet pages, emails, flyers etc. Direct face to face contact
with potential users of the library in terms of involvement with staff and
or student induction programmes came out as a successful and valuable method
of promotion, as was representing the library service at relevant meetings
e.g. clinical governance meetings and participating in events such as ward
education days, clinical nurses specialist forums, clinical audit days etc.
One NHS library has also found using national initiatives such as NeLH
Awareness week and National Science week to promote library services to be
successful. This included having coffee mornings, information skills
training days with training on database/Internet searching and open days.
There was also mention of promoting library services at a regional level.
One librarian has successfully bid for monies from her WDC to spend on
professional promotional material for a road show.
In terms of effectively reaching-out to potential users based out in the
community, one library has put the emphasis of it's promotion on the 'remote
access services' that the library can offer. It has been found that the
use of an out reach trainer has also served to increase usage of ILL
services and introduced new users such as physiotherapists and O'T's to the
service.
Thank you again for all your feedback it is much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Louise Wann
