I thought that other Innopac libraries would be interested to know that
Leeds has now fully implemented the Innopac CJK module. The catalogue home
page http://lib.leeds.ac.uk now offers a link to view
Chinese/Japanese/Arabic script in records which contain such data. This
reconnects to Innopac on a Unicode port.
Leeds holds about 40,000 titles in Chinese script, of which some 33,000 were
recorded - with Chinese script - in our previous Allegro database. These
records are being converted to MARC21 format and transferred into Innopac.
Format conversion is always a bit dodgy (!), but the results aren't bad, and
some 26,000 have been loaded to date. For current cataloguing, we are
downloading records from RLIN where available, although in the future, the
CURL database may also provide a source of records.
We also hold some 10,000 titles in Japanese and Arabic. At present, most of
these are in Innopac, but in romanised form only. In future, we intend to
hold the original script also.
The implementation process has been long and hard because of the data
conversion issues. However we are very pleased with the end result and
amazed at the sophisticated functionality for handling CJK within Innopac.
It is even possible to input a search in Chinese characters (though not in
Arabic since we have not yet purchased the Arabic indexing software).
My thanks to everybody - in Leeds and beyond - who have helped us achieve
this success. We have drawn very heavily on the knowledge and expertise of
other Innopac libraries in the process.
Michael
P.S. If you just want to take a look out of curiosity:
For Chinese do a title search on "zhongguo" and click on almost any title.
For Arabic, try a title search on yaqin
