>Understanding and addressing inequalities in the health (including
>mental health) of different groups in society has become a key
>component of contemporary health policy. There is substantial
>evidence to suggest that people with intellectual disabilities
>('learning disabilities' in the UK; 'developmental disabilities' or
>'mental retardation' in the US) have poorer health status than their
>non-disabled peers. To date, however, much of the work in this area
>has been predicated on the assumption that such differences are
>biologically determined. This special issue of JARID seeks to
>broaden this debate by seeking contributions that address the
>social, behavioural or biological determinants of health
>inequalities among people with intellectual disabilities. We are
>particularly interested in
>
>* Systematic reviews of differentials in health status between
>people with intellectual disabilities and their non-disabled peers
>* Systematic reviews of the determinants of the health status
>of people with intellectual disabilities (and among people with
>intellectual disabilities)
>* Primary research reports that add to our knowledge regarding
>the determinants of the health status of people with intellectual
>disabilities
>* Primary research reports that evaluate the effectiveness or
>efficacy of interventions to improve the health status of people
>with intellectual disabilities.
