SHORT COURSE
"Understanding Nationalism and Ethnicity"
This course offers an overview of the different theoretical approaches
to the notions of 'nationalism' and 'ethnicity' from a sociological and
social anthropological perspective. It considers questions such as, what
is the relation between state and nation, nations and nationalisms, the
relation between national and ethnic identity, as well as, those
relating to national consciousness and ethnic consciousness. By
focusing on linguistic, religious, historical and territorial
affiliations it considers the salience of these different cultural
markers in the construction of different group identities and the role
of the intellectuals in the post-colonial nation-building processes
which include ethnic group formation and/or national mobilization and
politicization both 'at home' and in the Diaspora. Examples are drawn
from the Middle East.
