If you are getting lots of code-gobbledegook in your salon messages
then set your subscription to receive messages in html format --
simply send the message:
set film-philosophy html
to: [log in to unmask]
If for some reason this does not do the trick, then try switching to
receive messages in the mime format -- simply send the message:
set film-philosophy nohtml mime
to: [log in to unmask]
Or you can check and change your subscription options via the
Jiscmail website, go to:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/film-philosophy.html
click on 'Join or leave the list (or change settings)', and follow
the instructions.

There are three formats for receiving salon posts: normal, html, and mime.
Normal would work fine if all members sent only ascii plain text
emails, but we cannot force all members to send in plain text, and
there will always be those who wish to format their emails. Thus, in
this normal setting, any email formating codes are passed straight
through as code-gobbledegook rather than processed (e.g. as bold, or
verdana, or green font).
In html and mime options messages are converted into the formating
the sender created.
Members who send their 'join' command using a mime- or html-compliant
email program *should* have this option set automatically.
