Summary
Delete quoted text when 'replying'
Send only plain text emails
Check message has suitable subject line
Send no attachments or 'business cards'
Don't broadcast 'personal' messages
Do not fan discussion 'flames'
Change to Digest version if your inbox is getting too busy
And, how to leave -- if it's all getting too much
When hitting 'reply' please always delete the text of the message you
are replying to -- namely, do not leave old posts underneath your
reply (but by all means quote lines you particularly want to refer
to). This can greatly reduce download times, and makes emails (esp.
digest ones) much easier and faster to read.
Please do not use html or styled formatting when sending messages --
some members will not be able to read your post, and non-formatted
texts take up less bandwidth and thus download quicker. Set your
email software to compose messages in plain text (ascii). For
example, if you are using Outlook Express go into your Preferences,
located in the Edit menu; click on Message Composition, and under
Mail Sending Format switch to Plain Text (you should also uncheck
'Reply to messages in the format they were sent'). Apart from
anything else, the salon is generally committed to public access
internet forms (i.e. acsii emails and simple web design).
Styled formatting can be replaced by a simple ascii text style guide:
to emphasise words *quote with asterisks*; film and book titles
should be marked with underscores -- Deleuze's _Cinema_, Sokurov's
_Mother and Son_; mark titles of articles and all quotations with
'single quotation marks'; and instead of tabs or indents simply
separate paragraphs with a one line gap.
When sending a message please check that the subject line reflects
the message content, and is not just one left over from a previous
thread. If you are replying to a digest message (or someone else's
reply to one), please take a second to alter the subject line from
'Re: FILM-PHILOSOPHY Digest...' to the subject line of the specific
message you are refering to. Not only does this make it easy for
other members to follow the current discussion(s), but it also means
that checking a previous subject thread at the website archive is
made easier.
Do not send information/announcements via attachments (these are
filtered out and will not get through to the salon members) --
instead convert your information to plain text and post to the editor
for inclusion in the regular News posts. Also do not send very large
texts (long essays, articles, theses), and disable any 'business
cards' or 'notify sender' options -- unless you actually want a
thousand notifications.
Please do not broadcast *personal* emails (or emails containing
private information) through the salon. If you wish to contact an
individual member, then by all means post a short message asking them
to contact you directly, off-list. Otherwise, a simple search of the
internet can usually bring up a contact email for a particular person.
The Film-Philosophy email salon is a completely unmoderated
discussion forum -- all posts are distributed without being reviewed
or approved by anyone. Thus the salon is self-governing: in a very
practical sense you members are its moderators, it is your salon, and
any difficulties that may arise between participants must be resolved
internally. Ordinary respect and courtesy towards other salon members
is expected, but threads will not be interrupted, nor will members be
removed, simply because the tone grows heated, as it sometimes does.
Please be aware that posts containing language or dealing with
subject matter that some might find offensive may appear on the list
from time to time, and such posts will *not* be censored. If a member
uses coarse or crude language do not reply in kind, but simply
respond to the ideas and arguments. Or if you read a post that you do
not think should be followed-up in discussion, simply delete it, and
do not reply to it -- do not clutter the salon by berating the
sender, but simply ignore the post.

If you want to limit your incoming mail you can change to the digest
version of the salon. This will allow you to receive posts from the
salon as a single large subject-indexed message, about once a day.
You can then simply read the contents list at the top of each digest
message to decide whether you wish to read the posts (tip: search
repeatedly for 'Subject:' to scan through to each post in the digest).
To change to digest membership simply send the message:
set film-philosophy digest
to: [log in to unmask]
To change from digest format to individual messages, send the message:
set film-philosophy nodigest
to: [log in to unmask]
To leave, send the message:
leave film-philosophy
to: [log in to unmask]
To join again, send the message:
join film-philosophy YOURNAME
or
join film-philosophy YOURNAME with digest
to: [log in to unmask]
