Adrian,
In relation to La Captive i was referring to the long
intro sequence of driving presented in a very minimal
manner where we follow Sylvie Testud and Stanislas
Merhar. It is simlilar in many ways to Gallo and
Sevingy in Brown Bunny. That was all i meant.
In terms of Akerman and 'politeness', I remember her
at a certain Creteil festival, and also at the ICA
years ago.
She seemed far from polite, and has an auteur
reputation (with all the connotations) to rival Gallo,
though minus the right wing sentiment!
In the autumn 1998 'genre' magazine, Gallo explicates
his right wing sentiments very clearly as
'boat-rocking'.
Also in relation to books, animation is a wellspring
of references, in many early disney we enter through a
book into the diegesis, 'Sleeping Beauty' especially.
Also 'the pagemaster' with Macauly Culkin (voice) is
all about 'books as doors'.
In Judy Garlands 'Meet me In St Louis' we enter
through a photoalbum into the narrative as one of the
photos 'comes alive'.
