Never Ending Story (1 & 2) and The Princess Bride (1987) would seem to fit
the bill for this.
However they are both mainstream family films and I'm not convinced that's
what you have in mind.
There is a scene in the film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
(1989) in which the lover sits in the restaurant reading his book while he
eats. He uses the book to distract himself from the 'crude' displays of the
thief. That is until he exchanges glances with the thief's wife.
