That which is called "Dolby Stereo" is a four-channel system, though it
used to be three-channel before they added surround to it. Right- and left
surround channels exist in Dolby Digital, which was released some twenty
years after Dolby Stereo. The six-channel Dolby Digital EX system (with
three surround channels) is so new that most theatres aren't even equipped
for it.
