    THE FESTIVAL

The festival, that has been taking place in Florence for seven years, is
one of the most important events worldwide devoted to the new communication
technologies in architecture.

BEYOND MEDIA/OLTRE I MEDIA, international festival of architecture in
video, is an yearly event promoted by the Department of Architectural
Technologies and Design "Pierluigi Spadolini" of the University of
Florence, curated by Marco Brizzi and organized by iMage. The festival has
been observing since 1997 the advance of multimedia devices in the field of
architecture by evaluating their impact on contemporary architectural
production and by promoting quality and research in the development of
communication media for design projects.

The festival program is articulated through: a selection and presentation
of the most recent and significant video and multimedia productions
realized worldwide; installations of interactive environments, projection
of films and television documentaries; meetings with the protagonists of
the international debate, scholars, designers; investigation on the
contemporary production and discussion of emerging theories; exploration of
architectural design methodologies based upon the application of video
tools and digital systems; international exhibition of architectural
projects developed in multimedia settings; training workshop in multimedia
design, audio-visual production in architecture, project communication.

THE THEME OF THE NEXT EDITION: "INTIMACY"

In order to acknowledge the impact and disclose the most significant
consequences of the transformations brought about by the new communication
media (both with respect to the design discipline and to the way everyday
spaces are used), this year's festival identified a topic to which several
contemporary issues are related. The 7th edition of the International
Festival of Architecture in Video is devoted to the topic of "INTIMACY".

Which are today the spatial ambits of privacy, of protection, of safety, of
intimacy? According to which modes and within what boundaries does the
familiar, domestic dimension of the inhabited space take shape today? Which
are, today, the limits and the forms of the public nature of space? Which
characteristics do the environments built by new technologies around
individuals take on? Through the theme "INTIMACY", the 2003 edition of
BEYOND MEDIA/OLTRE I MEDIA will once again investigate contemporary
architecture: built, designed or imagined architecture. It will do it by
taking into consideration architecture as it is when observed, told and
produced through the media. The public will be led to observe the inhabited
space, the city, the territory and consider the role of publishing,
television, cinema; it will be guided into the intimate space of satellite
devices, information and mobile communication networks, control and
surveillance instruments. The effects of communication technologies in
shaping inhabited space will be explored.

Within this broad topic, the BEYOND MEDIA/OLTRE I MEDIA festival will once
again pinpoint the most significant aspects of the transformation brought
about by the media, thus proposing an overview of the most interesting
researches in the field. The festival will especially focus on the
consequences produced by the impact of the media, thus anticipating
possible future scenarios.

As every year, the festival will unfold through the presentation of the 100
best works of communication in architecture (video, Internet, multimedia).
