Here's another suggestion that fits your category in a perhaps unexpected
way. This is Haile Gerima's _Sankofa_ which I would describe as a
borderless slave narrative that starts and ends in present-day Ghana (with
an African-American character), but inhabits a composite historical space
in the middle, with recognizable bits and pieces from various New World
locations (the American South, the Carribean, South America, etc.) -- this
is not only in terms of landscape and names, but also in terms of the use
of multiple languages, many of which aren't translated for us. An early
and sinister form of globalization! It's also a very "teachable" film.
