Hi,
Thank you everybody for replying to my posting about female initiation in
the movies. I am very grateful and have noted down all suggestions.
>Are you looking for specific rituals and specific passages, or for films
>that portray women going through all sorts of transitional and "trying"
>times?
What interests me in particular is the idea that action films are said to
mirror more precisely the journey that man has to take (overcoming of
obstacles through physical force, linear storyline) whereas woman's journey
is said to be somehow different (although it remains somehow a mystery) -
more circular etc. When women are portrayed as maskerading as the male
hero they seem to end up either dead (Thelma and Louise) or somehow limited
by their femininity (Lara Croft ended up wearing a dress). Also would Lord
of the Rings be any different if the ringbearer would be a woman
(notwithstanding the fact that Frodo is quite a neutral personality
anyway).
Thanks again,
Esther
