I don´t know of any source that proves Coppola knew
about this particular reel, but Wagner´s music
(Walkürenritt) was used as the introduction for the
"Wehrmachtbericht" (the radio broadcast about the
military situation intended for the German people) so
I´m convinced that Coppola wanted to eastablish a
connection on purpose.
