Building on Robert's comment, I would also point to the apocalyptic sci-fi
of the 1970s that predates Mad Max (and much of which stars Charlton Heston,
for better or worse)--Planet of the Apes, Omega Man, Soylent Green, Silent
Running, Logan's Run.
What is notable about these films is their not-so-veiled social commentary.
I'm most familiar with essays that treat the class, race and gender subtexts
in these films--good places to start with this are Annalee's Newitz's "White
Trash" and Fred Pfeil's "White Guys."
Best,
Sean

The Mad Max trilogy. It invented the genre.
