I didn't really like Billy Elliot either. However, I think people
are being a bit unfair with their criticism. Yes it is full of awful
stereotypes (the hardcase scottish father was particularly painful to watch)
and it presented and resolved complex issues in a very simplistic way and it
was mawkish and emotional rather than analytical. But this is why it was a
popular film. And this is what popular cinema tends to do and the
comparisons with loach and Leigh are I think misplaced. It is also one of
the reasons why Britain struggles to establish a pop cinema because there is
very little critical support for films like this.
