I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but the first segment of
Mario Bava's anthology horror film Black Sabbath, entitled "The
Telephone," is a masterpiece of minimalist horror. It concerns a high
class prostitute who is terrorized by a series of aggressive and
threatening phone calls. Be wary, however, that the US version of the
film changed the stories around so that "The Telephone" segment comes
second rather than first. Speaking of horror films, The Ring (both
original Japanese and US remake) makes important plot use of the
telephone (as do many horror films, When a Stranger Calls, I Saw What
You Did, Scream, Black Christman, etc.).
