Hafidha,
I don't want to begin a strand on this film, but I had to respond to one of
your comments. What is powerful about Fincher's project (for me) was how it
dwells in the facticity of everyday environments. As in Hitchcock, the
everyday is made strange. And I think making the everyday environment strange
taps into the very impulse to look in the cinema, since a lot of the time
what we look at is quite ordinary. In this way, I think we can rehabilitate
Fincher's obsessive visuals. A broad fit/mannerist relationship between
visuals and narrative, I think Adrian Martin would call it. Along with
Michael mann, I think Fincher is one of the most inventive and imaginative
directors in the US mainstream.
