Films on filmmaking: Cheryl Dunye's Watermelon Woman (and a faux
documentary at that); Altman's The Player(?); Egoyan's Ararat; Turkish
director Ceylan's The Small Town; Mahamet-Saleh Haroun's Bye Bye Africa.
As for self-consious film, Iranian cinema alone could fill a volume but
the ones that leap out at me are Panahi's The Mirror, and Kiarostami's
Taste of Cherry (depending on if you see the version with the coda with
outtakes of the film crew). Also the Canadian film Atanarjuat: The Fast
Runner features outtakes in a final coda which reveal the film as text
(and not 'real'). I'd also include Haneke's Funny Games come to think of
it.
cheers
