Hi there,
Do you make the distinction between sex scenes and love scenes and
interracial love stories? For reasons of censorship, if nothing else,
there's bound to be a limit on how far back you can go in the case of the
former, and most people would probably be hard pressed to go further back
than Kirk and Uhura in the 1968 "Plato's Stepchildren" episode of STAR TREK
or the Raquel Welch/Jim Brown western 100 RIFLES (1969), although in modern
terms the usual place to start would seem to be Cassavetes' SHADOWS and
Douglas Sirk's remake of the 1934 film IMITATION OF LIFE (both 1959) and
Larry Peerce's ONE POTATO. TWO POTATO (1964).
Interracial love stories, or ones dealing with miscegenation, can be found
easily going back to the first Hollywood films made in the teens such as
BIRTH OF A NATION (1915) and any of the many versions of OTHELLO, such as
Welles' 1951 version and Basil Dearden's 1961 update ALL NIGHT LONG. Dearden
also dealt with the issue in SAPPHIRE (1959)
There's an amusing checklist at this website:
