I recently read that the scene with the detective walking up the steps
before his murder was filmed twice. The storyboards were made by BASS
(and possibly filmed by BASS or other) and had the detective rushing up
the steps, suggesting an encounter.
Hitchcock re-shot the scene with the detective walking up the steps in
a normal fashion so that his murder comes as a surprise.
