Hi
A small but important point - Thompson's excellent Yield to the Night
(1956) is not based on the Ruth Ellis case. Joan Henry (cousin of Bertram
Russell & Thompson's lover) wrote & published the novel in 1954. Ellis
killed Blakely around New Year 1955 and was executed July 13th 1955.
Filming for 'Yield' began October 1955, with a screenplay written by Henry
& Thompson, closely based on her novel (although Joan Henry is quoted as
saying that they were already making the film when Ellis was hung). The
film was released a year after Ellis was executed so public response to the
film will have been shaped by the case, although its incorrect to claim
that its based on her life. Easily done though because the parallels
between the two are startling!
