There was a production of Der Sandmann (Eckhart Schmidt, 1994) a couple of
years back. I didn't get a chance to see it, but it can't be worse than that
godawful theatrical recording from Powell.
I doubt the cast will spontaneously be bursting into song, dance, or flames
in this one, but there is quite a body of literature on the female
automaton, with whom the protagonist Nathanael dances at some point.
