Richard,
I thoroughly agree with both recommendations, for Kiarostami's ABC
Africa and Varda's The Gleaners and I. I would add Patricio Guzman's
Chile, The Obstinate Memory. This is his autobiographical account of
returning to Chile after umpteen years of exile in order to show his now
classic The Battle of Chile to audiences, especially of the young, who
have never had the chance to see it because it was banned, and to whom
it comes as a revelation. Up to you to decide if it counters your
suggestion that 'The reflexive type foregrounds aesthetics'.

A visit to the Cuban film school at San Antonio de los Baņos provides
the occasion for a look at contemporary Cuban media education.
