There is an interesting little appreciation of Breathless by Philip Lopate in
the new collection Writers at the Movies (Ed. Jim Shepard, Marion Boyars) in
which he talks about the film's account of 'hanging out', a project assisted
by the choppy cutting. As Lopate describes it, the sense of dramatic
flattening, of no event being any more significant than any other, behaviour
lacking motive and undifferentiated, struck me as very redolent of
existentialism.
