One thing I learnt from Janice Tong's article was the different reception
given to Sautet's work by Positif and Cahiers, a mixed reception that may
have prejudiced the distribution and appreciation of his films. I remember
hearing Sautet decribed as a plodding Rohmer. Melancholy yes. Plodding no.
Rohmer, I suppose, to the extent that he is a filmmaker of dialogue,
manners, obscure human motives, a certain kind of bourgeois society. I have
only seen UN COEUR EN HIVER and NELLIE ET M. ARTAUD. Like Richard I say
check out Janice's article. (It made me want to see LES CHOSES DE LA VIE).
And the two films that I have seen are definitely worth seeing.
