-i think the impossibility of filming thought _qua_
thought is
demonstrated
pretty well by the impossibility of filming such easy
to think things
as
"however,"
"moreover," my favorite: "nevertheless,' or even good
old "and"
Words like "however", "moreover" and "and" are
conjunctions specific to verbal and written language.
Obviously, one can't film them; they don't translate
to other forms of language. Neither can you play a
dissolve on a piano, paint a jumpcut or write a fade
out. These are conjunctions specific to filmic
language that don't translate.
Anyway, I wouldn't say that these words on their own
can be called thoughts. Perhaps you're confusing
thought and language - they aren't the same. Thought
is a process, not a thing. Some people think
primarily with words, others think in images. Written
language does a good job of mimicking the first
process, film, the latter.
And no, you can't film beauty, but neither can you
write an image from an abstract film. Sure, it's
probably impossible to film Marx's Capital, but no
more impossible than it would be to write a
novelization of one of Brakhage's films. Both Marx
and Brakhage expressed their thoughts, though.
