In 'La ville est tranquille' the character of the politician/cheating
husband makes some explicit statements in support of globalization.
Guedigian dramatizes the interaction of the French, Africans, Arabs,
and Armenians, while also depicting various strata of political
engagement, from old left (a taxi driver sings several verses of the
"Internationale") to new immigrant-bashing right. This is a remarkably
rich film for classroom discussion.
