The Dark Mirror, 1946 directed by Robert Siodmak. Olivia De
Havilland playing the good & Bad twin. Haven't seen it for a few
years.

I just saw Adaptation tonight and it made me wonder about twins,
especially identical twins, and how they are portrayed in film. I
recently did a paper on Dead Ringers, which I am expanding to
send as
my graduate school application essay, so identical twins on film
seems
like an extremely interesting subject for a larger paper (possibly a
thesis). To me, Dead Ringers leaves the viewer with the feeling that
twins are nearly mutant-like and may not really exist in any world
outside of their own. Adaptation does not take that road but I am
unclear how to read Adaptation. I watched Dead Ringers 4 or 5
times
on consecutive nights in order to fully form an opinion so seeing
Adaptation just once surely is not adequate. I am sure, however,
that
I loved the film and am excited to see it again.
My question to the list is this: are there many instances of identical
twins in film? And if so, are these films readily available on VHS or
DVD? I feel there are many psychological issues at hand when
dealing
with twins especially issues involving Lacan's mirror and Freud's
ego-id-superego relationship. I would be interested and eternally
grateful for any help on this matter.
For those who asked, I am nearly finished with the Dead Ringers paper
and will send it to you ASAP. I would appreciate any feedback on that
as well.
Thanks in advance,
~Joe
