I'd suggest the Godard classic, LE MÉPRIS (1963), which was released in
Italy (IL DISPREZZO) and in the US (CONTEMPT).
Also Scorsese's documentary IL MIO VIAGGIO IN ITALIA (1999), released 2001
in the US (MY VOYAGE TO ITALY).
From a different angle, you may like to look at Gianni Amelio's LAMERICA
(1994). It is not so much about Italian and US cultural exchange. It's
about a current wave of cultural exchange between Italy and middle Europe,
a new wave that is like a returning ghost of the celebrated Italian-US
exchange.
