_The Matrix_ is big because, in spite of its hackneyed pseudo-philosophical
narrative, appropriated action sequences, alarming gender politics and
Orientalist world-view, it gives a "once-in-a-lifetime" chance for film
academics and journos to talk with deep intent about a mainstream Hollywood
action-flick under the manifold legitimacy of discussing "contemporary
popular philosophical anxieties", "cult cinema", "serious discussion of the
effect of Hollywood blockbusters" or even "academic responses to _The
Matrix_", all without any hint of irony nor fear of reproach.
I've no doubt I'll now be struck by a bolt of lightning from some
film-deity, but right now I feel compelled to say it:
_The Matrix_ is many things to many people, and for me it is a fantastic
example of the problems of neo-philia (excuse the pun).

PS. I predict that, in a twist if fate, before long I shall have succumbed
to the inevitable and will write an article on _The Matrix_.
