Dear All
Any idea what Ocester [Clough], a sixteenth century
stream-name might literally mean? It is crossed by an
all-but-certain Roman Rd, but is several miles from
either of the forts the road connects? Close by is a
Dinas Sitch Tor, which was not recorded until by the
original OS as far as I'm aware. Adjacent to the two
names is a lovely, well-preserved segment of what
seems to be a Roman Rd's terrace and agger.
Could the names be referring to a 'lost' fortification
of some kind in the plantations that now cover the
area? Or does 'Ocester' mean something like "to /
towards the fort"? Any significance in Dinas (as
opposed to Din)?
The county archaeologist says no one has had a
'proper' archaeological look up there so......
Any help greatly appreciated
Paul
