Flush was designed so a simple editing change, to wit
call flush( iunit) --> flush( iunit)
would produce a legal flush statement. Looks to be a task for sed.
The rest of the design was simply cribbed from rewind, IIRC.
Flush was added in response to a comment, IIRC,
from comp.lang.fortran.
