Dear All (both new and old),
A few words about this list, by way of introduction and explanation (and
perhaps more comprehensible than the 'form' e-mail which your original
subscription will have generated).
The message I sent out before this one is a 'typical' example of the sort
of thing which I expect to post to this list, on average, once per week.
Those who were on this list's predecessor should see no difference from
what went before, other than slightly less detail on current London
seminars. Normally the message contains notices of lectures and seminars
for the coming week of which I am aware in, e.g., London, but things are
naturally rather quiet at this time of year.
However, any of you can post to this list, simply by sending a message to:
[log in to unmask]
And please, do so!
When you do so, the message will come to me first. I intend to employ a
very 'light' editorial touch (i.e. normally I would expect simply to
approve the message - but see below). A message so treated will appear
exactly as sent, with [Classicsgrads] in the subject header, and appearing
as if from the original sender.
If you reply to a message, your reply will go to the original sender, and
not to the list as a whole. To post a reply to the whole list, you must
send a fresh message to the list.
Please do not, under any circumstances, send attachments to the list (I
have set it to rejec them automatically if you try). This is considered
bad 'netiquette' as not everyone has e.g. a high speed institutional
connection to the internet. If you wish to disseminate an attachment,
either state that individuals may e-mail you direct to request it, or else
post it on the web and notify the list of the web address.
A word on content: this is intended to be your list, not 'mine', and there
are no hard and fast rules about content. However, there are already some
185 of you on this list, and the primary considerations must be usefulness,
relevance, and above all, consideration for each other. To this end,
however funny the joke/picture/spam I suggest you refrain from posting it;
the same is true for human rights concerns, however well-meaning, etc.
Besides obvious postings about conferences, jobs, etc. might I suggest that
those who know of, or are responsible for organising, post-graduate, work-
in-progress, and other research seminars, please publicise them at the
first opportunity on this list.
(In this regard, see the web-listings at:
http://www.homepages.ucl.ac.uk/~ucrajrp/ics/postgrad.htm
which include seminars as well as conferences. I would like to improve the
coverage of these if possible).
I would urge you all also to go to the new
http://www.sas.ac.uk/icls/pgforum/
which should provide a useful adjunct to this list. Start by adding your
thesis to the listings.
If you have any questions, or comments, please don't hesitate to e-mail me
at this address ([log in to unmask]).
with best wishes to all,
Jonathan
