Dear Craig, I'd be grateful if you would get this sad news out on your poetry
network, and perhaps ask that Giovanni's Room email list be sent the news as
well: Almitra David, poet and friend, died last night, Nov. 9, after a long
struggle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, at
11a.m. at Friends Meeting House, 15th& Arch, and a reception afterwards at
Friends Select, where she taught Spanish for many years. Of her award-winning
book, IMPULSE TO FLY (perugia press, 1998), Calyx magazine said: "There are
complex and many-layered poems, nothing in them to suggest that it is possible to
separate joy from pain, or transformation from tragedy."
Thanks, Craig. Her partner, the artist Rocky Toner, asked me to pass this
word along to the poetry community. Blessings, Eleanor
