It's nearly Friday. This may be an old chestnut, but I ask the question for a
serious piece of work I am doing.
Is there a recognized etymological origin for the English word 'archives' ?
Jenkinson cites the Greek origin given in OED from a word meaning 'a public
office', but I have also seen a reference to a slightly different Greek
origin from a word meaning a chest or receptacle in which records are kept.
Thanks
