I disagree with Dick. An argument like this tones everyone up, brings roses
to the cheeks and a spring to the step.
More seriously, it is important that 'moderate men of all shades of opinion'
should draw together and discuss what is uppermost in all our minds, the
future of freedom. As archivists we shouldn't allow the minutiae of our
professional navel-gazing to obscure the fact that our most important role
in society is to act as guardians of recorded history: the corporate and the
national memory. This debate reflects the macabre reality that today in
large parts of the world there are no moderate men and no shades of opinion.
As archivists during the great struggle that is approaching, we should speak
out, not only to save the written record, but for those peoples that have
fallen prey to fanatical and aggressive cultures and religions (of all
kinds), whose high priests, acolytes and followers stamp on freedom and
would enslave us too if not stopped.....
