The crossfall figure in BS8300 is designed to reduce the camber experienced
by wheelchair users. This, in my view, is rather excessive and the standard
crossfall of 1:40 is acceptable for both wheelchair user and drainage. I
would not accept anything greater than 1:40 as this would then cause
problems.
Perhaps the solution is to pursuade your LAto adopt BS8300 as their
standard.

Subject: Crossfalls
Has anyone come up against any difficulties relating to
standards for
crossfalls? Looking at BS 8300 it states (p.12) that the
gradient should
not exceed 1:50, except when associated with a dropped kerb.
We haven't
formally adopted the BS, but are encouraging staff to
implement its
standards. Crossfalls are continually being put in much
steeper with the
engineers arguing about drainage requirements.
Any comments on your experiences with this issue would be
welcomed.
Thanks,
Rebecca
