Dear Mike (and others)
There are problems with MTOs (if that is what you mean by MTAs) in that they
are currently not State-Registered. We had big problems when CPA inspectors
identified three members of the Reading staff who had been transferred as
MTOs from Medical Physics (where they had been doing immunoassay for 25-30
years) to Clinical Biochemistry when it was decided that all immunoassay
should be carried out in the one department. None of them were allowed to
work unsupervised (despite the fact that their experience with immunoassay
was better than that of most of the biomedical scientists) or to supervise
state-registered staff.
I understand that MTOs may soon be taken under the state-registration
umbrella, at which time this problem will disappear.

Dear All,
We have difficulties in retaining MLAs and are considering the possibility
of introducing MTOs or someother semi-professional group in an attempt to
retain staff. Is there a training course for MTOs in Biochemistry available
or has anyone else any suggestions (besides the obvious!)
Regards,
Michael Ryan
