A quick question. We are about to switch to pancreatic amylase instead of
total amylase and everyone in the hospital is happy with the idea after
nearly 6 months running them together. The only problekm we have is the head
of the Emergency Dept says he uses total amylase for parotiditis. I have no
confidence in it as a test having seen a patient this summer with a swollen
infected parotid gland the size of a second head and a normal total amylase.
Does anyone know of a good study looking at the sensitivity and specificity
of total amylase for salivary glands? Does anyone use salivary amylase to
diagnose disease of the parotid gland? Does anyone have anyexperience of any
test which might be useful for diagnosing this test knowing that it is not a
frequently run test but would be needed with a reasonable turn-around-time.
I hope one of you can help on this
Thanks
