Mohammad
My advice, a little at variance with Heart UK, is to wait until about 12
years of age (unless the family history is appalling). I have seen several
children and their parents falsely reassured because their total cholesterol
age 5 or 6 looked 'normal' compared to adult values but they were actually
high compared to their chronological peers.
Since I tend not to start statins until fully grown (I compare their height
each visit), I usually only rely on dietary advice between 12 years and
then, especially- as Ian points out- because their cholesterol can remain
fairly low until then.
There is growing European evidence that starting statins in childhood is
perhaps fairly safe after all, but I know of no evidence that I am doing
these patients a disservice by delaying treatment.
