Subject: Re: pharmacy screening for diabetes
In principle, I have no problem with community pharmacists doing diabetes
screening; it is likely to happen anyway, probably led by "customer" and
patient demand because of the sheer convenience. The important thing is
that the service should be safe and of high quality.
I'm concerned about quality issues and the level of understanding
pharmacists have of QC, EQA and all the related clinical governance issues.
"QA" is mentioned in the document (although not in connection with training
and record keeping), and there is advice to consult their local biochemistry
service, but all of these are presented as good practice rather than crucial
considerations. My (so far very limited) contacts with pharmacists have
indicated that they may not understand what QC and EQA are, let alone why
they're essential.
I think we need to be proactive in this. We all have experience of managing
hospital glucose testing and know the problems which can arise, so have a
lot to offer.
