Dear Stephen
Thanks for your comments
re ?
There are a bewildering range of different ways of expressing probability
ideas in the English language (rather than in mathematics): ? and ?? are
often used and I have even come across ???. Personally I often phrase
comments in the form of questions rather than assertions: eg 'is the patient
on a diuretic?'. With all of these these, the important thing is whether the
message is likely to get across to the recipient. It's up to our assessors
to make a judgement on this; but I am sure that you will be pleased to know
that we are getting feedback from GPs on the comments illustrated in the
summary; who by and large agree with the ranking.
The analogy with chess is of course ? and ?? are used as indicators of
increasingly poor moves, whereas ! and !! are indicators of increasingly
good moves. However in commenting '!' is seldom used except perhaps to
reduce the offensive nature of an obvious (but possibly overlooked)
suggestion!
with best wishes
Gordon
